Waterproof Hearing Aids FAQs

Get expert answers to common questions patients have about waterproof hearing aids:

Generally, no. Most hearing devices should be removed before showering.

Starkey waterproof hearing aids have the highest level of water protection available. This IP68 rating means they are completely dustproof and can withstand continuous immersion in water up to 3 feet.

However, it’s important to remember that no electronic device is indestructible. Always avoid intentional or prolonged water exposure to ensure optimal longevity and functionality of your hearing device.

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating indicates how resistant a device is to dust and water. The rating consists of the letters “IP” followed by 2 digits, and each digit represents a different level of protection:

  1. Dust Protection: Rated on a scale from 0 to 6 (0 = no protection, 6 = dust-tight).
  2. Moisture Protection: Rated on a scale from 0 to 9 (0 = no protection, 9 = protected against water at high pressures and temperatures).

The higher each digit is in an IP rating, the more durable the device will be against dust and moisture. For example, Starkey IP68 rated hearing devices have the highest dust-tight rating of 6 and can withstand continuous immersion in water up to three feet indicated by the 8.
